South Ari Atoll is one of the most productive fishing grounds in the Maldives. The atoll's unique geography - deep channels between islands, steep outer reef walls, and proximity to open ocean - creates conditions that concentrate bait and attract pelagic predators year-round.
Our base in Maamigili sits on the eastern edge of the atoll, giving us fast access to both the inner lagoon and the outer reef drop-offs. This guide breaks down what you can catch, when, and why - based on our daily experience on the water.
The Two Seasons
The Maldives has two monsoon seasons that fundamentally change where the fish are. Understanding this is the key to planning your trip.
Current flows east to west. Nutrient upwelling hits the western outer reef. This is peak big game season - Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Marlin. Calm seas, 30m+ visibility. Best conditions for offshore trolling.
Current reverses west to east. Productivity shifts to the eastern reefs - right where we're based in Maamigili. Prime season for GT popping and deep jigging for Dogtooth Tuna. Choppier seas but very fishable.
This means Maamigili fishes well in both monsoons. The SW season pushes bait directly onto our doorstep, while the NE season puts big game within easy range on the western reef. There is no bad time to fish South Ari Atoll.

Spawning December–March in equatorial waters. Aggressive feeders during spawn. 20–60kg common on trolling trips. Found on the outer reef edge following bait pushed by the NE monsoon current.
Follow baitfish pushed by NE monsoon currents along the outer reef edge. One of the most spectacular sport fish in the Indian Ocean. We practice catch and release for all billfish.
Resident reef predator. Lunar spawning cycles drive feeding aggression. 15–40kg fish regularly taken on surface poppers over reef edges and channel mouths. The most exciting surface strike in fishing.
Lives on deep reef walls at 80–200m. Arguably the hardest fighting fish pound-for-pound in the Indian Ocean. Peak catches during monsoon transitions when current shifts concentrate bait at channel mouths.
South Ari is the only year-round whale shark aggregation site in the Maldives (SAMPA protected area). Peak sightings August–November. If we encounter whale sharks while fishing, we sometimes stop to watch them - with no tourists surrounding us.

Most fishing charters in the Maldives operate from Malé or from resort-based boats with limited range. Maamigili offers three distinct advantages.
First, location. Maamigili sits on the eastern edge of South Ari Atoll. During the SW monsoon (May–Oct), the reversed current pushes nutrient-rich water directly onto the reefs near us. This means we fish productively in the season that most other operators call "off-season."
Second, proximity to deep water. The outer reef wall drops from 30m to 300m+ within minutes of our harbor. We're on the jigging grounds faster than anyone else in the atoll - which means more fishing time for you.
Third, the SAMPA whale shark protected area is adjacent to our fishing grounds. If we encounter whale sharks while out fishing, we stop to watch them up close - just you, no tourist crowds.
